What the Beep: What is going on with that I-35 construction?

The construction has been going on for over two years.

AUSTIN, Texas — KVUE viewer Anna wanted to know: "When is that construction mess on I-35 around Stassney Lane and William Cannon going to be finished? Seems like it's been going on for years."

She's right. It actually has been years. That construction started in 2016.

We've heard from drivers who have complained about narrow lanes in that area, but the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) said things there should improve soon.

It's a big project, even though it only stretches for three miles.

Here's what TxDOT is doing in that area:

  • Building new bridges at Stassney and William Cannon
  • Widening I-35 main traffic lanes to incorporate shoulders
  • Extending entrance and exit lanes along I-35 to allow for better merging of traffic

That's a lot of work – $76 million worth, to be exact.

But if all goes well, TxDOT said construction should be done either late this year or early next year.
