AUSTIN, Texas — Southbound Interstate 35 between U.S. 183 and U.S. 290 was closed due to a multi-car crash Monday morning.

Austin-Travis County EMS (ATCEMS) said just before 5 a.m. Monday that medics, police and fire crews were on the scene of a vehicle rescue at 6200 N. I-35 southbound. Medics on the scene were initially reporting a three-vehicle collision with one unconscious person pinned in their vehicle.

ATCEMS said a few minutes later that at least two patients were involved and that the pinned patient had been declared a trauma alert. Extrication was in progress.

At 5:04 a.m, ATCEMS issued its final update, saying the pinned patient had been extricated and medics were transporting them to Dell Seton Medical Center with critical, life-threatening injuries. The second patient sustained minor injuries and their transport needs were still being determined.

The Austin Fire Department reported that there were three patients involved but that two had minor injuries.

TxDOT Austin said around 5:15 a.m. that southbound I-35 was closed between U.S. 183 and U.S. 290 due to the crash. Drivers were instructed to detour via Exit 241 for Rundberg Lane or Exit 240 for U.S. 183.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
