Capital Metro launches new transit initiative in Austin

The transit initiative is providing local businesses discounted bus and train passes to give to their employees.

AUSTIN, Texas — Capital Metro launched a new initiative on Wednesday, trying to get more people to use public transportation.

The transit initiative is providing local businesses discounted bus and train passes to give to their employees.

Businesses can use MetroWorks or MetroRideShare as options for their employees’ commutes, CapMetro said. MetroWorks provides bulk discounts on passes, while MetroRideShare offers a vanpool lease agreement.

Mayor Steve Adler hopes the initiative will reduce congestion on Austin roads.

“We know that if we are actually going to do something about traffic in our city we are going to have to provide choices,” he said at the Mayor’s Mobility Breakfast event on Wednesday. “What we find is when people start using them, they become adherents. Not everybody is going to get out of their car, but for those people driving cars we want everybody else to get out of theirs.”
