AUSTIN, Texas — One person is dead after a three-vehicle collision in northwest Austin Wednesday morning. On Tuesday, they were identified as 27-year-old Egypt Catai West.

Austin-Travis County EMS (ATCEMS) said at 8:05 a.m. that medics were reporting a three-vehicle collision near the 5900 block RM 2222 with at least two patients involved, one of them pinned in their vehicle.

ATCEMS said one adult patient had been declared dead at the scene. The patient that was pinned was extricated from their vehicle and a third adult patient was transported to Dell Seton Medical Center with minor, non-life-threatening injuries.

Police believe a Ford F150 struck a solid waste collection truck in the inside lane of FM 2222, which caused the waste truck to drive over a small concrete divider and into southbound traffic, where it struck a Food Escape. Both vehicles then drove off of the roadway.

The drivers of the F150 and the waste collections truck were taken to the hospital. The driver of the Ford Escape, West, was pronounced dead on scene at 8:04 a.m.

Anyone with more information about this crash is asked to call 512-974-8111.

This was the 111th fatal traffic crash of 2021, resulting in 120 fatalities. On this date last year, there were 87 crashes and 93 deaths.
