WASHINGTON, D.C., USA — St. Edward’s University has been awarded a $1,181,608 federal grant to recruit and prepare undergraduate STEM students for teaching careers in biology, chemistry, and mathematics, U.S. Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) announced Wednesday.
According to a press release from Cornyn's office, a first installment of $629,641 will be awarded in 2020, and the rest of the funding will be awarded through 2025.
“Investing in the next generation of Texas STEM leaders will provide those students with invaluable skills now and keep Texas’ economy strong in the future,” said Sen. Cornyn. “I commend local leaders for their successful grant application and thank the Trump Administration for investing in the students at St. Edward’s University.”
The funding comes through the National Science Foundation (NSF), which supports research, innovation and discovery to provide the foundation for economic growth in America, according to Cornyn.
“This funding will support our efforts to develop a well-prepared teacher workforce that will, in turn, prepare and inspire young people across Texas and the nation to enter careers in STEM fields,” said George E. Martin, president of St. Edward’s University. “We look forward to working with our partners in the regional Austin community to impact teacher education in Texas.”
The project – led by St. Edward's University – includes partnerships with Del Valle Independent School District, UTeach Maker, Co.Lab Community Makers, and Breakthrough Central Texas. 18 undergraduates minoring in teacher education and majoring in biology, chemistry, or mathematics, will be supported by the project to achieve certification and become highly qualified middle and high school STEM teachers.
The project also includes a paid internship with a community organization to spark student interest in teaching. It will provide scholarships and additional support to help the scholars earn bachelors STEM degrees and learn how to be highly effective STEM teachers.
