Texas-Ex Mike Adams on Reagan, Longhorn football

From new school to old school, former Texas standout, Mike Adams, has left Vandegrift to take a new job as offensive coordinator at Reagan High School.

"People know Reagan statewide. They know the "R" and I'm just blessed and honored, and pleased to be here," said Adams.

Adams has made multiple stops in central Texas, but this particular job has it's own challenges.

"Numbers in terms of participation of our school, the population is just not very large," said Adams. "That's going to limit the football people that come out. I think that getting our kids to believe in the tradition like you spoke of, that's the first thing I told these kids, Reagan has three state championships. So, the history is here."

Speaking of history, Adams knows good and well what it's like playing for a tradition-rich school. He left UT a record-holder and is currently ranked third in all-purpose yards.

"When you're able to come to a school like Texas and not only have a good football career but just experiencing Austin. I enjoyed my time here and it's followed me the rest of my life and I think it always will. It's very important to be number one. Settling for second best is not an option and even as a player individually, you want to go there and accomplish great things."

That has spilled over into his coaching.

"Oh tons. I learned from one of the greatest coaches to coach football and one of the smartest: John Mackovic," said Adams. "(The) pro-style offense, I still apply some of those concepts. I plan on doing that here as well as some of the things that are currently being used in football today."

While he installs his offense at Reagan, I was curious his thoughts on the guy down the road, rebuilding the Longhorns.

"I think he did pretty good his first year. It's a matter of getting everyone on the same page, everybody getting aligned, and just work hard and grind. I know that's the agenda he's pushing, and I think we'll see a better football team this year."

With that formula, maybe we'll see the same from Adams and the Reagan Raiders.
