CLEVELAND — I'm sure Cleveland Browns fans will welcome any roster addition with any ties to Baker Mayfield.
The 2018 Heisman Trophy winner gave Cleveland fans hope, leading the Browns to a 7-8-1 overall record.
One of Mayfield's Lake Travis High School quarterback predecessors will soon join him in the Browns' quarterback room. Garrett Gilbert was signed by the Browns on Friday.
Gilbert, who recently led the Alliance of American Football's Orlando Apollos as that franchise's quarterback, was named the league's MVP.
That was after the league surprisingly folded two days ago.
Gilbert has been a member of the practice squads for four different NFL franchises including the Patriots. Gilbert received a Super Bowl ring while with the Patriots in 2015.
Prior to his NFL career, Gilbert began his collegiate career at the University of Texas, then transferred to Southern Methodist University and broke Mustang single-game passing records.
The Lake Travis lineage for Gilbert and Mayfield dates back to 2009. That's when Gilbert was named the nation's "Gatorade Football Player of the Year" and "USA Today's Offensive Player of the Year." On top of all of that, Gilbert led Lake Travis to a state championship, beating Longview, 24-17.
Mayfield led Lake Travis to 25 wins as a starting quarterback and to a state championship in 2011.
