The Moody Center, the University of Texas' future $338 million basketball arena, is slated to open in 2022.
UT released renderings of the Moody Center – named after the Galveston-based Moody Foundation, which provided a $130 million grant toward the construction – last year. The school said this grant to support Texas Athletics marked the single largest gift from the foundation in the university's history.
Specific details of the arena, however, remained a mystery outside of a seat capacity projection.
Some of those details have come to light from UT's Minister of Culture, Matthew McConaughey. McConaughey tweeted a rough sketch of what seems to be an arena of sorts along with numerous notes and details of said drawing.
The UT men's and women's basketball teams – as well as Texas Longhorns Athletics – Twitter accounts were tagged on the tweet.
In the picture McConaughey tweeted, it claims the total capacity of the arena would be 14,380. The picture also details 500 "luxury seats" above the "lower bowl" dedicated to season ticket holders who sit in the first three rows of the Frank Erwin Center. According to the tweet, the mezzanine level will sit 6,000 people. The tweet claims the "entire lower bowl" will seat 8,380 people.
University officials broke ground on the Moody Center on Dec. 3, 2019. The $338 million project, approved by the Board of Regents in December 2018, will replace the 42-year-old Frank Erwin Center, currently home to the UT men's and women's basketball teams.
"When the Moody Center opens, it will be the finest college basketball arena in the country, hands down, as well as an unbelievable concert and entertainment venue for the entire city of Austin," said Chris Del Conte, UT's vice president and director of athletics.
McConaughey was also present for the ceremony, which you can watch here.
Renderings released last year also show what the arena would look like from the outside and among the other structures in the area.
