Elgin softball: high stakes, low pressure

This deep in the playoffs, all of the teams are full of talent. The Elgin softball team is no different.

This deep in the playoffs, all of the teams are full of talent. You've got to have a little luck on your side and undeniable team chemistry. The Elgin softball team is no different.

"We're going to enjoy this ride as long as we can right now," said Elgin Head Coach Amanda Wolf-Schramm, "I like to win and I'm extremely competitive but at the same time, we want to keep it fun!"

They've also got a secret weapon in three student trainers who double as a hype squad.

"I said to them on Saturday after we won, 'you guys are one of the reasons why we've been so successful this year," said Wolf.

And the players feed off of their energy.

"When we're down in the dugout they hype us up. We have a lot of rally gear," said Elgin senior, Ava McCoy.

The most popular might be the bubble machines, or what they affectionately refer to as The Coachella's; symbolizing the positive energy at the annual music festival.

To Coach Wolf, softball is about more than the game, it's about family.

"Just having those personal relationships that's what it's about. We want them to love being out here and that helps take some of that pressure off sometimes," said Wolf.

Elgin faces Barbers Hill in a best-of-three series starting Wednesday.

Count on this team being ready, bubbles and all.
