Drew Brees eclipsed NFL record; inspires Longhorn quarterback

When it comes to Drew Brees' new record, Texas Longhorns quarterback Sam Ehlinger said, "It's really awesome that it happened to such an incredible person."

NEW ORLEANS — It was a moment which delivered goosebumps.

"I don't think it could've happened in any better fashion than it did," said New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees.

Eclipsing Payton Manning's NFL's all-time career passing yards record on a touchdown pass in the second quarter of the Saints game against the Washington Redskins.

Brees reached 71, 968 career passing yards. The game paused to celebrate the historical moment. A surreal moment inside of the New Orleans Superdome.

"To then have the moment with Sean [Payton], Mr. Baker from the Hall of Fame, and then my boys and my wife, Brittany, and my daughter, Rylen, that was, it was incredible," said Brees.

That moment with his family was a hall-of-fame moment as well, especially his message delivered to his children.

"Hey, you're willing to accomplish anything in life you're willing to work for, right," said Brees on the sidelines with his children and family. "I want to be the best father for them and set the best example for them."

Brees' peers expressed their respect on social media. The Texans' young quarterback DeShaun Watson tweeted, "Congrats on the record, Great friend, role model, and better leader. Keep inspiring."

Even fellow Westlake High School Chaparrals like Ravens kicker Justin Tucker tweeted, "makes me proud to call myself a Westlake Chaparral. Just witnessed greatness."

Drew Brees continues to be a role model and an inspiration to young quarterbacks across the country, but especially those at Westlake, including the latest great quarterback from Westlake, current Longhorn Sam Ehlinger.

"It's really awesome that it happened to such an incredible person, he's such a great dude off the field," said Ehlinger.

Ehlinger eclipsed Brees records at Westlake as a three-year starter, but Sam has always been inspired by the current NFL career passing yards record holder.

"Being able to go to the same high school as him, kind of feeling that sense of pride and knowing that I walked the same halls as him and the same fields as he did is really cool," he said.

Eighteen years as an NFL quarterback and one Super Bowl title with the Saints has been a cool ride for Brees.

"It's been an unbelievable journey and I'm just so grateful," said Brees.

A journey Brees says is far from complete in New Orleans.
