Austin Anthem 'First Kick Social' has fans fired up

The main Austin FC support group kicked off the 2019 MLS season by coming together to build the new and booming soccer culture in Austin.

AUSTIN, Texas — Major League Soccer kicked off its 2019 season on Saturday, and Austin FC will be joining that league in 2021 as Austin's first pro sports team.

That of course has soccer fans fired up -- so much so, that on Saturday the Austin Anthem, Austin FC's main support group, had its "First Kick Social," with more than 70 fans showing up to watch some of MLS's opening games.

The group told KVUE events like this are going to happen more and more to build up the new and booming soccer culture, all in time for the 2021 season.

"It's starting to feel real to everyone and we're getting more and more people coming out," said one of Austin Anthem's organizers, Landon Cotham. "These events are just going to keep being really important for the growth of Austin soccer culture."
