Capital Metro will begin offering service in Round Rock this summer, after the city council approved an agreement with the transit provider.

The Round Rock City Council on approved the fixed-route service on March 23. Under the agreement, Cap Metro will begin service on three routes Monday, Aug. 7.

“We are excited to welcome Capital Metro to Round Rock,” said Round Rock Mayor Alan McGraw in a statement. “Partnering with Capital Metro allows our residents the ability to move in and around Round Rock, especially those that really depend on assistance with transportation. It also gives our daily commuter into Austin another alternative to reach other Austin stations and to get downtown – and to get off I-35.”

The routes are proposed as Route 50, 51, 52 and 980 Express.

Route 50 will run as far north as ACC-Round Rock and the Round Rock Outlets, and extend south to the Howard Lane park-and-ride in north Austin. The route will run along Sunrise Road and through downtown Round Rock.

Route 51 is proposed to operate as a circular that would connect the Dell campus and St. David’s Round Rock Hospital. This route will also run through downtown Round Rock. Both Route 50 and 51 will operate 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. weekdays.

Route 52 is listed as a “reverse commute” route, running two morning and two afternoon trips between the Tech Ridge Park and Ride and downtown Round Rock.

Route 980 Express will begin operating when the MoPac express lanes are opened. It will run from the Round Rock Transit Center to the Park and Ride at New Life Baptist Church before continuing into downtown Austin.

“This marks an important step for Capital Metro, the City of Round Rock and the entire Central Texas region,” said Wade Cooper, chairman of the Capital Metro board of directors in a statement. “With housing costs pushing residents outside of our service area, cooperative agreements like this are a big step towards addressing congestion. I applaud Round Rock for their leadership on this critical issue.”

Fares will be consistent with the current Capital Metro rates.
