The construction of a major project to expand U.S. 183 South began, at least ceremonially, Wednesday morning when ground was broken on the nearly $800 million project.

The project will expand a roughly eight mile stretch of the road from U.S. 290 to state highway 71 to give each direction three tolled and three non-tolled lanes. The Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority said the expansion should triple the capacity for the area and hopefully alleviate the heavy delays drivers run into on the road.

KVUE’s news partners, The Austin American-Statesman reported the project will eliminate five intersections where people can cross U.S. 183 including: East 51st Street, Techni Center Drive, Bolm Road, Vargas Road, and Thompson Lane.

The construction is planned to take approximately 4 ½ years, ending in 2020. An initial phase should be open at some point in 2019. The Statesman, lane closures will happen mostly at night and end by 6 a.m., 10 a.m. on weekends.
