VERIFY: Does Willie Nelson have a 'Designated cannabis recreation area' in Austin?

The plaque reads, "Willie Nelson Designated cannabis recreation area," and was seen at the Auditorium Shores Gazebo in Austin.

AUSTIN — A Willie Nelson plaque is raising many eyebrows after a photo of it taken at the Auditorium Shores Gazebo started trending on Reddit.

The plaque -- which was posted on Reddit Sunday -- reads, "Willie Nelson Designated cannabis recreation area."

Many Reddit users were starting to believe this plaque meant that Nelson himself was allowed to smoke recreational marijuana in that designated area, although it is illegal to do so in the state of Texas.

However, the City of Austin confirmed to KVUE Monday that the plaque is fake and that it's not the first time they've seen plaques like this around.

The city said they have taken down the fake "peel-off" plaques before, but people continue to display them around Austin.

Sorry Willie fans, but smoking cannabis anywhere in the City of Austin is still illegal.
