TXDOT: Motorcycle Awareness Month Campaign

During the Spring months, Austin roads experience an increase of motorcycles.

AUSTIN — During the Spring months, Austin roads experience an increase of motorcycles.

Therefore, May is recognized as Motorcycle Awareness Month.

According to the Texas Department of Transportation, a quarter of motorcycle crashes happen when vehicles make a left turn in front of a motorcycle. So, therefore, it is advised to delay your turn until the motorcycle passes.

Last year, crashes killed 491 and seriously injured more than 2,000 motorcyclists in Texas.

"We want people to be alert, share the road, look twice especially at the intersections because you don't always necessarily see motorcycles so you're always prepared for them coming up in traffic," said TxDOT spokesman Brad Wheelis.

Keeping all motor-vehicles on our roads safe is a two-way street. Most deadly motorcycle crashes involve speeding, drinking and driving or motorcycles not staying in their lanes.

So, it's important to know the level responsibility of taking a motorcycle for a ride.
