Trial for man accused of murdering Austin choir teacher begins after mistrial

Shawn Gant-Benalcazar is accused of murdering Austin choir teacher Kathy Blair in 2014.

AUSTIN — After a judge declared a mistrial in the capital murder trial of Shawn Gant-Benalcazar -- the 33-year-old who is accused of murdering Austin choir teacher Kathy Blair -- his retrial began on Wednesday, Oct. 24.

Wednesday's witnesses included Blair's son, the paramedic who responded to the scene, Blair's landlord, a retired Austin Police Department detective, and a detective with the Galveston Police Department.

The jury is expected to hear from the retired APD detective again on Thursday. Prosecutors said they'll start by playing the phone call between Gant-Benalcazar and the detective. The jury is expected to see the video confession from 2015 as well.

The mistrial was declared in August after 19 hours of jury deliberation.

Authorities believe Blair was burglarized before she was found dead in her home in December 2014. Gant-Benalcazar and Timothy Parlin were identified as people of interest in her death. The jury in Gant-Benalcazar's capital murder trial was shown video in which he confessed to killing Blair after she lunged at him.
