Three-day uptick in burglaries, thefts after vehicles left unsecured, Lakeway police say

Lakeway police are investigating a string of vehicle burglaries and thefts.

LAKEWAY, TEXAS — Thieves and carjackers in Lakeway have been busy over the last three days because 15 cars were burglarized and four cars were stolen, according to a Facebook post by the Lakeway Police Department Wednesday.

Officials said all of the recent incidents have involved people leaving their cars unsecured; and in some instances, people have left their vehicles unlocked with the keys in the ignition. Police said most of the incidents have occurred in the following subdivisions: Ridge at Alta Vista, Tuscan Village and Canyon Ridge/ Highland Villiage.

The most recent case happened Wednesday night when police arrested three people for allegedly stealing a vehicle from a residence in Lakeway. Initially, police said they attempted to stop the vehicle for speeding on Lakeway Boulevard. However, the suspects drove away and stopped at a nearby parking lot. There, police said the suspects got out of the vehicle and ran into a wooded area.

Police said the Texas Department of Public Safety helped them capture the suspects.

One suspect from Austin is charged with unauthorized use of a vehicle and evading arrest. Two juvenile suspects are charged with evading arrest.

Police said they are investigating whether Wednesday night's incident is connected to the string of other vehicle thefts and burglaries in Lakeway.
