A San Antonio police officer has been placed on indefinite suspension after trying to feed feces to a homeless man.
Officer Matthew Luckhurst was a 5-year veteran of the force at the time of the incident, which took place in May.
In a statement released Friday, Chief William McManus said that Luckhurst bragged to a fellow officer about placing the feces in a sandwich and placing it in a Styrofoam container next to a sleeping homeless man. In July, an officer reported the incident to internal affairs.
The case was presented to civilian and sworn review boards in October. Both boards recommended indefinite suspension. Chief McManus met with Luckhurst last week and upheld the suspension.
“This was a vile and disgusting act that violates our guiding principles of “treating all with integrity, compassion, fairness and respect'," said Chief McManus. "The fact that his fellow officers were so disgusted with his actions that they reported him to Internal Affairs demonstrates that this type of behavior will never be tolerated."
Mayor Ivy Taylor also released a statement Friday regarding the incident. "Firing this officer was the right thing to do," Mayor Taylor said. "His actions were a betrayal of every value we have in our community, and he is not representative of our great police force.”
