Polo Club apartment fire displaces 21 in northwest Austin, AFD says

The Austin Fire Department battled a single-building apartment fire in northwest Austin on Sunday.

AUSTIN — The Austin Fire Department battled a fire at the Polo Club apartments Sunday afternoon.

According to the AFD, units responded before 4:10 p.m. to 8519 Cahill Drive to reports of a fire from the second story of a single apartment building.

The AFD said the cause of the fire was ruled accidental from discarded smoking materials on the balcony. Officials estimated about $300,000 in structural damages and around $75,000 in content damages.

The Central Texas Red Cross and apartment management will be assisting after 21 residents were displaced. According to the AFD, fire heavily damaged two apartment units, water and smoke damaged two others, while fire control and light smoke damaged four.

No injuries were reported, though a cat named Sophia was reunited with its owner.

Officials reported at 5:04 p.m. that the fire was under control.
