Permanent guardrails now in place near Austin hike and bike trail to protect pedestrians

Permanent guardrails have been put in place near Austin's popular hike and bike trail after a driver hit and killed a man on the trail.

AUSTIN — A project that aims to keep pedestrians and cyclists safer in downtown Austin has finished.

Crews finished work on permanent guardrails along Cesar Chavez Street near the Ann and Roy Butler Hike and Bike Trail.

Temporary barriers were put there in 2012 when a driver hit and killed a man and injured a woman on the trail.

Now, all parts of the trail and road are back open.
