39-year-old, Anthony John Diaz, named as cyclist killed on UT campus by bus

Medics said the crash occurred near San Jacinto and 23rd Street. 39-year-old, Anthony John Diaz was pronounced dead on scene.

AUSTIN, Texas — 39-year-old, Anthony John Diaz, has been named as the cyclist killed late Monday night after a collision with a bus on the University of Texas campus.

According to Austin-Travis County EMS, the crash occurred at San Jacinto Boulevard and 23rd Street, which is near Darrell K. Royal - Texas Memorial Stadium, at 10:33 p.m.

Based on preliminary reports, medics said Diaz was trapped under the bus and was later pronounced dead on scene.

University of Texas police reported the bus was a Capital Metro bus.

Capital Metro CEO Randy Clarke released the following statement Thursday regarding the accident:

On behalf of the entire Cap Metro family, I would like to express our deepest condolences to the friends and family of Mr. Diaz during this difficult time. We will continue our internal investigation of the crash and are working cooperatively with law enforcement officials. 
As a cyclist, I feel very strongly about the importance of safety for cyclists and all roadway users. The 1,800 men and women of CapMetro consider safety our number one value and are committed to operating your community’s public transportation system in a safe and courteous manner.

CapMetro said they are working close with investigators about the incident.

Officials said the cyclist Diaz was not affiliated with UT and that the CapMetro driver is cooperating with the investigation. 

UT Austin police said they believe people may have been on the bus at the time of the incident. Those people, or other witnesses, are asked to call 512-471-4441, ext. 9.
