One dead after crash near COTA

Police said the crash involved a COTA entrance gate.

AUSTIN, Texas — One person is dead after a crash near Circuit of the Americas on Saturday morning, Aug. 14.

According to Austin-Travis County EMS, a car crashed into a gate at around 5:15 a.m.

Officials said a 2020 Dodge Ram truck was approaching the large, metal gate with two separate swing arms at the entrance of COTA. The entrance-side gate was blocking the entrance and the exit side was partially open. The driver moved between the two arms, but the end of the exit gate arm entered the cab of the truck, striking both the driver and the passenger.

The deceased, the passenger, was identified as Kevin Nelson, 55. He was pronounced dead on scene. The driver was transported to the hospital with serious injuries.

This is Austin's 69th fatal crash so far in 2021, which have all resulted in 75 total fatalities for the year.
