New CapMetro CEO addresses SXSW traffic concerns

The new CapMetro CEO said he's determined to make sure service runs smoothly.

AUSTIN -- With South by Southwest (SXSW) just days away, all eyes are on public transit. The new Capital Metro CEO Randy Clarke said he's determined to make sure it runs smoothly.

Wednesday marked Clarke’s first day on the job. Prior to Austin, he was the vice president of operations and member services for the American Public Transportation Association in Washington, D.C.

He said his first priority as CEO is to listen and learn from the Austin community about what it's looking for.

Friday is a big day for the city as SXSW brings in an influx of traffic.

Clarke said CapMetro is working to make sure they provide the best service possible.

“We have significant expanded service both on our rail, bus and late night service,” said Clarke. “We're going to have a lot of ambassadors out both on our rail stations, our public squares. We know this is a big event for the community and we're committed to delivering the best possible service for a successful event.”

Looking towards the future, Clarke said the focus is on having dedicated corridors that may include a light rail and bus rapid transit.
