DEL VALLE, Texas -- Police have identified the 64-year-old motorcyclist who died after he was struck and dragged by a tractor on State Highway 71 about 5 miles east of Austin Tuesday afternoon.
Texas Department of Public Safety said that Brian Jeffrey Hastings was parked in his Harley-Davidson in the right shoulder near 4400 SH 71 when he pulled out into the right lane, failing to yield right of way to an oncoming Volkswagen Golf vehicle. The Volkswagen steered to the left in order to avoid colliding with the motorcyclist, DPS said. Hastings then lost control of his motorcycle, weaving between the right and left lanes, DPS said.
As a tractor that was traveling in the right lane started to approach Hastings, the driver locked his brakes. However, he was unable to stop his tractor before striking Hastings. Hastings and his motorcycle were dragged under the tractor for a short distance before the tractor driver was able to come to a stop.
Hastings died on the scene of the crash. No other people were injured in the collision.
Westbound SH 71 was completely shut down in both directions before it was reopened that night.
