Mosquitoes are back in Austin after recent rains

An exterminator told KVUE that high temperatures and low winds play a factor in Austin's increase in mosquitoes.

AUSTIN -- Mosquitoes are making a comeback and they're expected to get even worse in the next few days.

An exterminator from ABC Home & Commercial Services said you can blame the recent rain, high temperatures and low winds for the mosquito comeback.

"You're going to have a lot of areas with a lot of standing water," said Brian Kelly, operations manager at ABC. "That water will stay there and get stagnant, so populations will explode probably by the end of next week."

To avoid getting bitten, here are some tips from the experts:

  • Wear mosquito repellant outdoors.
  • Consider getting your home treated by pest control.
  • Clear out your gutters and trim your bushes and trees.
  • Get rid of standing water.

"The shrubs and bushes around homes are one of the things that (mosquitoes) are attracted to the most," said Kelly. "The heavier the growth and up against the house, the more you're going to draw mosquitos to stay there during the day and you bring in populations in numbers right to your home."

Kelly said ABC has been getting more calls for mosquito control every year for the last five years. He said it may be because more people are moving here, but it also may be because of the heavy rain we have seen the last two years.

Kelly said he blames the increased construction around the city for causing standing water.
