Man found in Del Valle creek bed not a suspicious death, police say

Police said a passerby from the road called 911 to report the body.

DEL VALLE — Austin police are no longer classifying the investigation into a man's body found near a creek bed in Del Valle as a suspicious death, officials told KVUE Wednesday.

The body was found at approximately 3:05 p.m. Tuesday near a creek bed at 3005 East Texas Highway 71, police said.

Police said a passerby from the road saw the body and called 911. Austin Police, Austin Fire, and EMS responded to the scene and found a deceased man near the creek bed off the westbound service road of East Texas Highway 71.

Tuesday, police classified the incident as a "suspicious death" in a press briefing, but Wednesday morning, police recanted the classification. Police said the man appeared to be in his early 30s but did not have any other identification for him.

Austin police said there was no visible trauma to the man's body. The Travis County Medical Examiner's Office is performing the autopsy of the body and will determine a cause of death.

When asked if the incident was unusual or rare for the area, APD's Dimitri Hobbs responded, "I haven't heard of one lately. Yeah, it is."
