Longhorns and bulldogs have a history of not getting along

Turns out, the beef between the Longhorns and the Bulldogs runs deeper than a Sugar Bowl match up.

AUSTIN — It's interesting to watch this mascot fight between Bevo and Uga the bulldog -- but did you know these two animals have had a huge beef for some time?

With just a few taps on the horn, they come running.

Mike Young takes care of the longhorns that sit right across from the Fast Park at the Austin Airport.

It's a convenient spot for travelers to check out the cattle.

“People come by two or three times a day to take pictures with them,” Gina Vanwinkle, the Fast Park manager, said.

But, you may not want to get too close.

"I got hit the other day by that one right there,” Young said. “I was standing there talking to somebody just like you, his horn came through and hit me right here and knocked me up against the truck."

So, when he saw Bevo charge at the Georgia mascot during the Sugar Bowl this week, well --

“Frankly, I wondered why it hadn't happened before,” Young said. “If it's a creature they don't know, they're probably going to get after it."

“Yeah, I would never take a bulldog and say, 'Let's introduce it to a longhorn and see what happens,'” Kim Roche, a professional dog trainer, said.

Roche said English bulldogs were originally bread to fight bulls.

“Bulldogs would go into a ring with a bull, and they would try to take this angry bull down,” Roche said.

So, it's safe to say the two don't have the friendliest past. And this incident at the Sugar Bowl? It might have just proven it.
