A local nonprofit developer is now set to provide new affordable housing units for more than 100 deserving people in South Austin.

The construction of Bluebonnet Studios is just about complete in the trendy South Lamar neighborhood. The company is not only constructing affordable studios, but on-site support programs to help its struggling residents improve their daily lives. The on-site programs offer English as second language classes, financial stability programs and health programs.

Bluebonnet Studios is set to house 107 single adults, including low-income workers, formerly homeless veterans, individuals with disabilities, and seniors.

While giving KVUE News a construction tour, the developers said the rent is only $400-700 per studio. This time around, they are also setting aside at least five rooms for musicians.

"We used to be weird and cheap, I think we're still a little weird, but it's gotten expensive, and so it's hard for working class folks that are on disability income, for veterans, for musicians, people have been priced out of this community,” said Walter Moreau, Executive Director of Foundation Communities.

Bluebonnet Studios is being built by the local nonprofit -- Foundation Communities with energy efficient appliances.

The executive director said the application for the studios will be very open soon. To learn more, you can visit the Bluebonnet Studios website.
