Thousands of kites dotted the skies over Zilker Park in South Austin on Sunday.

Rainy weather delayed the start of the 89th annual ABC Kite Festival by an hour and a half. Festivities started around 11:30 a.m.

Despite the delay, organizers said it turned out to be great day to fly kites.

"There is nothing more enjoyable and a better way to kick off spring than to come out to Zilker Park with your kids and family and fly a kite. It makes everybody happy," said Bobby Jenkins, president of ABC Home and Commercial Services. "This for flying kites is great weather, everybody is really excited about it."

Organizers expected around 30,000 people to attend.
