AUSTIN -- Thymes up for local beloved South Austin nursery. The owners of It's About Thyme, Diane and Chris Winslow, said Friday that they were forced to close their doors after 39 years because they were unable to find a new location.
After two years of exploring areas for relocation after losing their lease, the Winslows decided to close down their family business in the middle of this summer.
The nursery, which has seen a steady rise in profits in the last five years, will be leaving behind the 3,200 readers for their weekly gardening newsletter.
"Another iconic Austin business bites the dust because of the Austin condo craze," Chris Winslow said.
The local nursery started out as a tiny greenhouse in 1979, attached to Diana Winslow's house on Alpine Street. The original Whole Foods was actually her first customer, according to the press release. The nursery faced two more relocations before ending up where they are today. With the business in limbo for the last two years, Diana Winslow has begrudgingly accepted the state of things.
"I struggled with the separation anxiety for the last two years, and I have to accept it," she said.
"Our goal has always been to help gardeners create the vegetable patch or backyard
landscape of their dreams," Chris Winslow said. This approach brought them hundreds
of loyal customers, all saddened by the prospect of the nursery closing.
