Free parking near Barton Creek Greenbelt entrance may disappear

The permit would be needed Fridays from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. and all day Saturday and Sunday, which has frustrated visitors who typically park there on the weekends.

All along Shannon Oaks Trail in southwest Austin are signs that read, 'Street Being Considered for Residential Parking Permit.'

Residents have petitioned the city to require a permit for the three-block stretch.

"What's happening now is not working very well for our neighborhood," said Gary Knippa, who has lived in the neighborhood near the trail entrance for over 30 years. "On weekends, we really can't have people over because there's no place to park."

The street is often filled with cars of people who intend on hiking the Barton Creek Greenbelt. The neighborhood, which lies just across the street, is easy access -- and free -- parking for those people.

"We've had postal delivery can't get to the mailboxes... A lot of times there's trash left in the yards," said Knippa.

The permit would be needed Fridays from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. and all day Saturday and Sunday, which has frustrated visitors who typically park here on the weekends.

"I haven't even made a plan B yet. You know we can go to other places near Lady Bird Lake, but the draw is different it gets packed so easily. So it's nice having a place or different points of entry along different park trails so that people can have the option to spread out," said Taylor Herrmann, who hikes the trail nearly every weekend.

Herrmann uses the neighborhood for parking.

"They can come out and enjoy this and park for free. And you know to take that away would be a big disfavor to the city of Austin," said Herrmann.

Before anything happens the city's Transportation Department will conduct an on-street parking surveys to determine if the street meets the requirements. The process can take up to a month, but residents in the neighborhood hope it will happen soon.
