Fran's Hamburgers on South Congress demolished

Another piece of "old Austin" was torn down Wednesday, but another local business will take over the lot and honor Fran's.

AUSTIN – Another piece of "old Austin" was torn down Wednesday, more than a year after permanently closing.

Crews tore down the Fran's Hamburgers building on South Congress Avenue on Wednesday, with a nostalgic group observing the demolition.

"Every beginning's got to have an end," said Fran Junk, owner of Fran's Hamburgers.

Junk said she is ready to accept change, while others are very protective of the old Austin legacy. After inspecting plans for the future, Elaine Ireland, who watched the demolition, said she understands.

"I'm sad, because so much of old Austin is disappearing," Ireland said. "The younger generations are going to make their changes, what they're comfortable with."

Torchy's Tacos will be taking over the spot once demolition is complete.

"One icon for another, so long as it is Torchy's and not Chili's, absolutely," said Matthew Gatewood.

Junk said she is happy the site will stay local. Although change isn't easy, there is some hope. Tearing down the past means building Austin's future.

"I feel proud, I feel proud of Austin period," said Junk. "I can't go on forever. Whatever changes, I'll change with the times."

A representative for Torchy's said they do plan to pay homage to Fran's in some of their retro décor. Once demolition is complete, work will begin on the new Torchy's.
