AUSTIN — Native Austinite, humorist and country music entertainer Sammy Allred has died, KVUE's news partners at the Austin American-Statesman report.

The Statesman said he first gained national fame in the early 1960s when he and his sidekick were regular guests on Arthur Godfrey's radio program. He was 84 when he died Thursday.

Allred's band, the Geezinslaw Brothers, were regulars on the "Louisiana Hayride" radio show based in Shreveport in the late 1950s, according to the Statesman. He hosted a show called the "Sammy & Bob Show" with Bob Cole on KVET-FM starting in 1969 before he was fired in 2007.
