First African-American church in San Marcos to become a historic landmark

The first African-American church in San Marcos will become a historic landmark and is expected to be restored with a $150-thousand grant.

SAN MARCOS — The San Marcos city council voted unanimously on Wednesday to make the first African-American church in the city a historic landmark.

The historic First Baptist Church was bought by a resident last year that did not know it's history. The new owner of the church stated he was going to tear it down, but later learned about it's importance.

The church is said to have been burned down in 1873 by the Ku Klux Klan and was rebuilt.

Now the church will be restored with a $150-thousand grant, which it recently won.
