El Arroyo's popular signs turned into book of jokes

"Do you ever sit with your friends and realize you're the Beyonce?"

Jokes that can be seen on El Arroyo's marquee outside the Mexican restaurant on Fifth and Campbell Streets in downtown Austin can now be found in a book.

It's called El Arroyo's Big Book of Signs Volume One and it launched the week of November 16.

Co-owner, Ellis Winstanley, said the restaurant has been showcasing daily jokes for more than 30 years.

"Do you ever sit with your friends and realize you're the Beyonce?" Winstanley read aloud some of them.

"So what if nobody was president and we all promised real hard to just be cool?"

"If Britney Spears can get through 2007, you can get through today."

"McConaughey 2016: Make America Alright Again," is the most popular. Winstanley said it garnered some 25,000 likes on its Facebook page.

"Maybe broccoli doesn't like you either," he read.

Winstanley said the response to the book has been overwhelming.

"Oh my gosh, I've been waiting for this. I haven't driven down Mopac or exited Fifth Street in so long. I miss coming to work that way. There's just a lot of connections with it," he explained.

The connections are simple. The jokes make people laugh.

"Happy Mother's Day to all the teachers I accidentally called mom once," Winstanley read.

But don't expect Winstanley to tell you who's behind those jokes.

"That's our little secret," he said.

What he will say is that it's a group that's responsible.

As for what ended up in the book, Winstanley said that was "based on how hard we were laughing."

That honest approach landed more than 155 signs in volume one.

"The first 40 years of childhood are the hardest," he read.

With volume two coming out early next year.

The book is available, here.
