2 Dallas officers indicted in man's death while in custody

A lawsuit filed by his family accuses the officers of applying excessive pressure to the man's head and torso.

A Dallas County Grand Jury indicted two Dallas police officers in connection with a man's death while he was in police custody.

Dallas police Sergeant Kevin Mansell and Officer Danny Vasquez were indicted on a misdemeanor deadly conduct charge.

It stems from a 2016 case in which a man was restrained for acting erratically. Tony Timpa died in police custody.

A lawsuit filed by his family accuses the officers of applying excessive pressure to the man's head and torso.

According to Dallas police, officers arrested Tony Timpa near 1720 W. Mockingbird Lane on Aug. 10, 2016. Police say his erratic behavior continued and he was "combative and aggressive," during his arrest. Police said Timpa was subjected to "physical restraint" and was later pronounced dead at Parkland.

The Dallas County Medical Examiner ruled the Timpa's death a homicide and determined that he died of sudden cardiac arrest, secondarily caused by the "toxic effects of cocaine and stress associated with physical restraint."

Both officers remain on administrative leave.
