Coronavirus updates in Central Texas: What to know Monday

Here are the latest COVID-19 updates, closures and postponements in Central Texas for Monday, May 17.

COVID-19 numbers:

  • Texas: More than 2.4 million cases have been reported in the state, and more than 49,900 people in Texas have died, according to the Texas Department of State Health Services.
  • Central Texas counties: 
    • Travis County: At least 83,366 cases have been reported and at least 864 people have died. At least 81,922 people have recovered from the virus.
    • Hays County: At least 18,731 confirmed cases have been reported and at least 245 people have died. At least 18,191 people have recovered from the virus.
    • Williamson County: At least 39,513 cases have been reported in the county and at least 473 people have died.

Updates:

8:20 p.m. – The Texas Department of State Health Services' COVID-19 dashboard reported 23 new deaths on Monday. On Sunday, Gov. Greg Abbott announced that Texas had recorded its first day ever with zero "newly reported deaths" in a single day. 

3 p.m. – Texas Gov. Greg Abbott informed the U.S. Department of Labor Monday that the state will opt out of further federal unemployment compensation related to the COVID-19 pandemic, effective June 26, 2021.

According to a press release from the governor's office, this includes the $300 weekly unemployment supplement from the Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation program. For more information, read about this story here.
