BASTROP, Texas — The City of Bastrop is launching a "BIG" volunteer initiative in 2019.

The Bastrop Information Guide, or B.I.G., will serve to enhance the experience of everyone who visits downtown Bastrop.

"The Bastrop Main Street Program is excited to spearhead these efforts as we try to provide opportunities for success for our small business downtown," Bonnie Cofey, Main Street Advisory Board Member and B.I.G. Volunteer Coordinator, said.

The program hopes to provide visitors to downtown Bastrop with informative recommendations and area expertise through a group of volunteer community members.

"At this time, we're seeking dedicated volunteers with a passion for the sustainability and revitalization of downtown Bastrop, to serve as ambassadors for our community and provide a warm, memorable experience to our visitors as Bastrop Information Guides as we prepare to launch the B.I.G. street team early next year," Sarah O'Brien, Director of Hospitality and the Main Street Program, said.

Bastrop residents who wish to volunteer may apply to receive certification into the program. Orientations are scheduled for Friday, January 4 at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the Bastrop Museum and Visitor Center. Certification is required before hitting the streets and will include a training program produced by the City of Bastrop, including Visit Bastrop, Bastrop Museum and Visitor Center and the Bastrop Police Department.

Volunteers will work on Main Street during events and on weekends. The shifts are set to be first Fridays from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.; Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. or 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.; and special events as needed.

Residents can request an application by emailing sobrien@cityofbastrop.org or calling (512) 938-6481.
