AUSTIN — Last week a man allegedly smashed about 80 windows at Bowie High School leading to campus to be closed down last week. After repairs were made over the weekend, students will return to class on Monday.
Police are asking for the public's help in identifying the man who allegedly vandalized Bowie High School in South Austin, leading officials to close the campus for two days.
Austin police released photos of the man Thursday afternoon and added that there is a reward being offered to anyone who can help identify the person. If you know this person, call 512-472-8477.
School surveillance video captured the suspect throwing rocks at the glass doors and windows on campus.
Classes and events have been canceled Thursday and Friday at the Bowie High School due to the damages discovered on the campus.
During a press conference Thursday afternoon, police said officers responded to the campus at 4:39 a.m. and found about 100 panels of broken glass throughout the campus including some academic wings, the cafeteria and in the gymnasium.
Austin ISD Police Chief Ashley Gonzalez said officials are working with contractors to make the school operational again. Police believe only one man was involved by using bricks and rocks to damage the school, Gonzalez said.
At first, school leaders were planning on just having a delayed opening, but less than an hour after announcing a delayed opening Thursday on Twitter, they announced classes and events would be canceled for the day.
Police will continue to monitor campus safety overnight and moving forward. The principal is adjusting schedules to have as minimal impact as possible on finals.
A letter released to parents reads:
This call is on behalf of Principal Mark Robinson. I am calling to let you know about an incident that occurred and has affected our campus very early this morning which will place our campus on a 2 hour delay.
Regretfully there was considerable damage done to our campus during the overnight hours. Because of this we will be on two hour delay today, Dec. 13.
AISD police are investigating as the incident is being investigated as a crime and of course, we are working cooperatively with the investigation.
I appreciate the staff members that are working hard to clean up the damage.
As always, we appreciate your support of Bowie High. Please feel free to contact us at if you have any questions or concerns.
