Austin's first container homes completed

You may remember a story we told you last April about a local woman designing and building the first two container homes in Austin. Now they're complete, sitting side by side on East 51st Street.

They're the brainchild of Austin architect and designer Patrice Rios.

We first visited her four months ago when she was just starting this project.

"It's never been done before," Rios said.

She describes the homes as modern to the max. Each one is two stories with three bedrooms and three baths. They're just a little over 1,400 square feet.

"People love the flow of the space," Rios said. "Seeing the whole thing come together has just been awesome."

Each home comes fully furnished. Features include a restaurant-esque kitchen, a flowing steel staircase and even a little local flavor with UT decorations.

"We're tring to bring some of that local Austin feel into these houses," Rios said.

In the backyard is an 8x20 shipping container.

"These can be set up with plumbing for a small kitchen or bathroom," Rios said.

"To have a backyard, studio, office space, extra bedroom is really valuable. I think they're going to go pretty fast."

So what will one of these cost you?

"Right now, we have each house on the market for $552,900," Rios said. "You're in walking distance to the new HEB and all of the restaurants, a park and the lake."

For what you get and this location, Rios says this is a heck of a deal!

The property listings can be found here and here. More information on the interiors, kitchen and bath by Troo Designs, located in Mueller, can be found here. More information on the shipping container design by Sige & Honey can be found here.
