AUSTIN — A Sobering Center is coming to Austin this August to keep intoxicated people out of jail, according to Community Impact Newspaper.

The Sobering Center of Austin -- which will provide 40 cots for visitors to sober up -- will be located at 1213 Sabine Street, Community Impact said.

Officials said the goal of the sober center is to allow police and EMS workers to use their time more efficiently by reducing jail bookings and hospital visits for people who do not need to be there, Community Impact reported.

According to Community Impact, Commissioner Brigid Shea said, “We’re not clogging up our jails and burdening our taxpayers by putting people in jail who don’t need to be.”

Community Impact said the sober center is set to open Aug. 22.
