Austin ISD teachers getting raises after board approves $1.6B budget

Austin ISD approves $1.6 billion budget.

Teachers at Austin ISD schools will have a little extra money in their checks after the school board approved a $1.6 billion budget.

Officials said the budget will offer a 1.5 percent salary increase for employees and will cost the district $8.1 million.

The budget is also focused on supporting school safety, early literacy and programming that will target reinventing the urban school experience. Those projects include Montessori programming, early college high school expansions and a dyslexia project.

The district is expected to send about $670 million in local taxes on the state because of "recapture" or the state's Robin Hood plan. The plan requires property-rich districts to send money to the state; that money is then re-distributed to poorer districts.
