The cadet was identified as Devon Coney.

"Immense sadness over the passing of one of our best and brightest, Devon Coney, who died earlier this evening at a local hospital. Devon’s positive attitude, ever-present kindness and joy, and megawatt smile are just a few of the many things we’ll miss," Austin Fire tweeted Tuesday evening.

In a press release obtained by KVUE, Austin Fire said that Coney suffered an unknown medical emergency at approximately 7:30 a.m. Monday at the department's training academy. Officials said they immediately started treatment and Coney was transported by Austin-Travis County EMS to South Austin Medical Center, where he later died on Tuesday.

AFD said Coney's medical team had not yet found a reason for his condition and will have to wait for the medical examiner's findings to learn more about his passing.

APD Chief Brian Manley and other agencies extended condolences to the Coney family Tuesday evening.

"My heart breaks for our @austinfiredept family and Devon Coney’s family. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you," Manley tweeted.

Coney was a former civilian employee of the Austin Fire Department for four years, according to officials.
