AUSTIN — Austin Police are investigating what they are calling a "suspicious death," after a body was found inside a burning car.

Police were first called to a car fire in West Austin on Shepherd Mountain Cove near Highway 360 around 1:20 a.m. Friday. When they arrived they found a black Mercedes fully engulfed in flames. Crews quickly put out the flames and then discovered a body inside.

Austin Police told KVUE News that there was no other car involved and no sign of a crash, which is one of the reasons why they are investigating the incident as a suspicious death. Police added the car was completely burnt.

It’s unknown if the person inside the car died in the car fire or was dead before the fire happened. Police said late Friday afternoon that it was a woman's body that was found in the car.

Neighbors, school buses and employees on their way to work had to take detours, since Shepard Mountain Cove shut down through West Courtyard Drive in the early morning hours, while police and fire were on the scene investigating the incident.
