APD motorcycle officer laid to rest

An Austin police motorcycle officer who was critically injured in a Sept. 1 crash and died three days later was laid to rest on Monday.

Senior Police Officer Amir Abdul-Khaliq was involved in a crash near Burnet and Ohlen Roads the morning of Sept. 1 while escorting a funeral procession. Abdul-Khaliq served with APD for nearly 17 years, and his service packed the Austin Peace Academy in Central East Austin. So much so that some stood on the lawn to pay their respects.

“When he woke up on Thursday, if he knew he was going to get into an accident that day, and later die on Sunday, he would still get dressed and come to work and do his job that day, that's the kind of guy he is,” Senior Officer Chris Frierson said of his friend.

“I’ve never heard anyone say a single bad word about Amir,” Police Chief Art Acevedo said.

The procession escorted the father of five to Dale, Texas where he was laid to rest. Austin police said they hope to hold a public service Friday, Sept. 9, and that they are still working out details for the event.
