PFLUGERVILLE, Texas — "I'm just glad to see you moving around. That's incredible," Sergeant Scott McKissack said with a smile as Anthony Lilley made his way into the room using a walker.
Lilley said he was changing a tire on the side of the road on Jan. 22, 2018. He said he remembered seeing the headlights coming right at him.
"It could have been a lot worse," Lilley said. "I'm just blessed that they put the tourniquets on when they did."
McKissack is one of the people who put a tourniquet on Lilley. He was off-duty, heading home from work when he saw the accident and decided to help.
The Pflugerville Police Department sergeant joined two Austin police officers, Shawn Lindblom and Evan Fischer, while they worked to save the man's life.
"If you guys didn't have the training that you all had, this probably would have been a lot worse," said Lilley, as he sat beside one of the men he said saved his life. "I probably wouldn't have been here."
McKissack said it was incredible just to see Lilley again.
"It's amazing. It really does fortify the reason why we come to work every single day. It just strengthens you and makes you happy for what you do because it's a grind every day, and it does turn into a blur," McKissack said, as he looked at Lilley. "But when this kind of stuff happens, it really does make things so surreal and really, really cool."
Lilley's girlfriend, Melissa Tambornino, held his hand while he talked to the officers.
"I'm grateful," she said. "Without them, he probably wouldn't be here, so thank you guys for that."
The Pflugerville police chief also presented Lilley with a challenge coin, saying he will always be a part of the police family.
