2 arrested, charged in summer murder of Buda man

Officials said the 36-year-old victim was found dead in the suspects' home in July after being stabbed and shot with an Airsoft BB gun.

BUDA, Texas — The Hays County Sheriff's Office on Tuesday arrested two people in connection to the murder of a Buda man earlier this summer.

Mark James Stevens and Jeanette Lauralee Stevens, both 38 and from Buda, were arrested on Dec. 18 on felony murder charges.

The sheriff's office first responded to a home on Brandon's Way in Buda on July 26 at 7:51 a.m. for a welfare concern. There, officers found the homeowners, who allowed them access to their home. The victim, 36-year-old Brandon Lamont Fontenette, was found dead inside with what officials described as traumatic injuries. His death was later ruled a homicide by the Travis County Medical Examiner's Office.

The sheriff's office later learned that after a physical disturbance at the house, the victim was shot multiple times with an Airsoft BB gun and stabbed once around 4 a.m. on July 26. He died from the knife wound with no efforts at resuscitation or medical intervention, officials said. The sheriff's office reported the Stevens family remained asleep in the house until law enforcement arrived later that morning.

After conducting multiple witness interviews, enforcing several search warrants, and receiving forensic medical evidence that contradicted the Stevens' reports, they were eventually arrested and are now in custody of the Hays County Jail with bonds set at $250,000 each.

Kerry Fontenette, the victim's father, says Brandon leaves behind two twin boys who will turn 5 in January.
