Sparks from welding led to fire at Globe Life Field, investigators say

Globe Life Field will still open in March 2020, officials say.

ARLINGTON, Texas — Updated at 6:51 p.m. Monday with a statement from the vice president of Manhattan Construction Company.

Sparks from welding ignited combustibles, which led to a fire Saturday night at Globe Life Field, Arlington officials said Monday.

According to authorities, the fire occurred around 2:30 p.m.

Lt. Mike Joiner said the sparks ignited the combustibles that were stored on the sub-roof below.

The Arlington Fire Department says construction workers inside the ballpark were quickly evacuated and no injuries were reported.

Officials said the flames were difficult to fight because of the construction, but the fire was contained under an hour.

"Approximately 2,000 square feet of roof was damaged," said Greg McClure, the vice president of Manhattan Construction Company, in a statement. "It will be removed, inspected and replaced."

Globe Life Field is the new stadium of the Texas Rangers and is expected to open in March 2020.
