Sanchez Elementary school could get makeover, merge with 2 other East Austin schools

This would make Sanchez one of a plethora of other schools either receiving a makeover or being rebuilt under the 2017 billion dollar bond package that was approved by voters.

AUSTIN — Big changes could be coming to several East Austin elementary schools.

Austin ISD is considering consolidating three elementary schools in East Austin, meaning students who attend Metz, Sanchez and Zavala, would all attend one campus.

Currently, all three of the campuses are under-enrolled. However, according to KVUE's media partners at the Austin American-Statesman, district officials are considering giving Sanchez Elementary School a $25 million facelift, making it a modern school.

If the board approves the plan at the Sept. 24 meeting, the school would reopen in 2021, the Statesman reports.

The meeting begins at 7 p.m.
