Lake Travis ISD announced Wednesday it will add five minutes to the instructional day at each campus, beginning in the 2017-18 school year.

The district said the additional minutes are needed for several reasons, including complying with state-mandated minutes of instruction, adding professional development days for teachers and staff, maintaining a week off at Thanksgiving and ending the school year for students before Memorial Day. It will also create “an opportunity for transportation services to operate more efficiently as well as to accommodate the projected increase in student ridership district wide,” LTISD said.

The LTISD Board of Trustees adopted the 2017-18 calendar in January, with the first day of school set for Aug. 16, 2017 and last day for May 25, 2018. During the 2017-18 school year, elementary schools will still start at 7:40 a.m., but will end at 2:55 instead of 2:50 p.m. Middle and high school students will see their start and end times shift in the new school year. Both middle and high schools will start at 8:50 a.m. and end at 4:05 p.m.

Parents/guardians with concerns or questions about the additional time and potential impact on activities and programs are advised to speak with their respective school.
